Off-grid farm with a focus on sustainability

Myssjö farm is an off-grid farm, which means we have no electricity connection to the farm. Instead, we have our own solar energy-supplied facility. This means that you have to be extra careful about the resources available on the farm. It doesn't get more natural than that.

What we do to have a more sustainable and eco-friendly business:

  • Reuses existing material on the farm

  • Buying second-hand

  • Buys products from nature-friendly materials

  • Buys soap, shampoo and washing-up liquid that are gentle on the environment

  • Composts and sorts our waste at source

  • Cooperates with local entrepreneurs and buys locally produced products

  • Produces our own electricity using solar panels

This is how you organize one more

sustainable wedding

Did you know that an ordinary wedding generates 63 tons of carbon dioxide? That's more than one person consumes in an entire year! So there is a lot that you can do to have a more sustainable and eco-friendly celebration.

Here are some tips on how to organize a more sustainable wedding:

  • Think local. Look for local flowers, food and drink options. Dare to think vegan, vegetarian or game meat when it comes to food. Choose based on the season. Your carbon footprint will be smaller while you support the local business community.

  • Paper. Feel free to choose invitation cards and envelopes made from recycled paper and ink that is gentle on the environment. An alternative could also be to send a stylish electronic invitation, so you save both postage costs and transport.

  • Transportation. Plan and coordinate your purchases. This results in less packaging waste and weight. Advise guests to carpool or take public transport. Or rent and pick them up by bus. An opportunity for pleasant socializing, before the festivities begin.

  • Borrow, rent or buy second hand. Consider whether you have to buy a new one. Wedding clothes are usually something that is used once in a lifetime, so why not buy them second hand? There are companies that specialize in the reuse and rental of wedding clothes. Porcelain can also be rented, a much finer and more environmentally friendly alternative to disposable products.

  • Eco-friendly confetti. Flower petals and birdseed are good environmentally friendly alternatives to confetti and glitter to throw over the bride and groom. Degradable confetti is also available for purchase. If you like tinkering, you can make your own confetti by punching leaves.

  • Decorations. Plan a little extra when choosing decorations to reduce litter. Could live plants complement nicely together with cut flowers? Choose textiles from recycled materials or natural fibers instead of manufactured fibers, and your carbon footprint will be reduced. Instead of balloons, you can blow soap bubbles, hang up flag games or find your own innovative ways to celebrate.

  • Skip the ugly lights. Choose stearin candles, it is a good choice for the climate because stearin candles are made from renewable raw materials unlike paraffin which is made from fossil raw materials like oil. Swan-labelled candles must contain at least 90 percent candle wax. Another option is to use beeswax candles. Beeswax candles emit neither smoke nor toxins when they burn. People hypersensitive to regular candles may even experience an improvement in their allergy as the beeswax cleans up the bad air.

  • Food waste. Was there food left over after the party? Arrange an after-party at home or let guests bring food home.

  • Think rubbish. Every event generates waste. Make sure your wedding planner and venue hire have a plan for recycling and composting.
